No joke — Saskatchewan and Newfoundland are booming!

May 30, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Let’s be serious here – Saskatchewan and Newfoundland have not typically been known as provinces with great employment and economic prospects. For years they experienced a steady outflow of workers to the wealthier provinces, however that trend seems to be reversing. Top 5 Resume Mistakes

May 27, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I got this from Jobosity – The Job Blog… it’s a great blog with tons of great career advice, check it out when you have a minute!

Today’s insight was about resume writing tips to keep in mind — and more specifically the common mistakes to avoid that will get your resume placed at the bottom of the pile:

1) Too long – People do not want a novel!!! I cannot stress this enough! I know you probably got through school by writing paragraph after paragraph of drawn out facts and conclusions, but this is the real world…. most people don’t have/don’t want to take the time to read through a lengthy resume. The average HR person will spend between 10 and 30 seconds reading your resume… get to the point about why you are the best candidate for the job!

2) Typographical/grammatical error – This is an instant turn-off. Have your resume proof-read. More than once. And not by your friend who probably doesn’t have any more of a clue how to get a job than you do… this is where your campus career services comes in, they can be a great resource, all you need to do is ask!

3) No description of job functions – “So did you actually do anything at your previous job?” employers may wonder… not good for you.

4) Unprofessional Appearance – If you are still using the same template for your resume as the one you applied for your first job with almost 10 years ago… you may want to think about an upgrade.

5) Achievements Omitted – How are employers supposed to know what you achieved if you don’t tell them?
