Turn your internship into a career!

June 20, 2008 · 1 Comment

Are you an intern looking to get ahead? I would recommend checking out East Coast Internships — it’s a site for students who are seeking or completing internships. Being an intern isn’t always pretty — fetching coffee, answering the phone and filling up the printer with paper isn’t exactly what you would consider your dream job. However, your internship is a basically a really long interview — your employer knows that past behaviour is the best predictor of what to expect from you in the future. So how can you get an edge on the competition and turn your internship into a career? Here’s some tips to remember from:

  • Dress appropriately
  • Learn as much as you can
  • Get to know EVERYONE
  • Under promise and OVER deliver
  • Learn about your industry

Want to be your own boss?

With the cost of living skyrocketing, more and more young people are considering entrepreneurship as an option for life after graduation (or even during school!) It makes sense; many young people want to manage their own careers (and lives) and running your own business gives you the chance to be rewarded for your hard work and be passionate about what you do, on your own terms!

However, entrepreneurship is not for the weak of heart. You should honestly answer the following questions to see whether you are suited for the roller-coaster life of entrepreneurship:

- Are you a self-starter?

- Are you easily discouraged or can you motivate yourself through the inevitable tough times that are to come?

- Can you handle the stress of not knowing when your next paycheck might be coming in?

Entrepreneurship is for people who enjoy working hard and are passionate about their lives. If after serious self-assessment you think you are still cut out for the job, take the plunge into the exciting life of entrepreneurship!
