If you didn’t use the holidays as a time to connect with and expand your network, seize the day and make it part of your New Year’s resolution. Networking isn’t nearly as hard as you think it is, and you know a lot more people than you think you do! Monster.ca has come up with a list of 5 simple steps to get you on your way to networking effectively in 2009.
- List potential prospects. You need to let everyone you know that you are in the market for a job. Make a list of people who are in or who may know someone in the field of work you are looking into: your hairdresser, neighbour, professors, friends’ parents, etc. You will be surprised at how many people will make it on this list!
- Contact those people. All it takes is a quick phone call, email or letter/card in the mail.
- Be clear about what you want. When contacting your network, be clear about what kind of job you are looking for, as well as what you are willing and able to bring to the table.
- Informational interviews are key! If you do come across a name at a company or industry you are interested in, ask to set up an informational interview. Informational interviews are a great way to not only get information about the career, company and industry you are interested in, but are also a great way to expand your network. Remember that while it may eventually lead to a job, do not expect your informational interview to mean that you will be offered a job…you are there to gather information only!
- Keep your eyes and ears open. Always be aware of new opportunities around you. If you find out someone in your network knows someone at a company you want to work for, ask them to introduce you or at least provide a warm lead.
It is said that up to 70% of jobs are not posted, meaning that networking is one of the best ways to get your foot in the door. While it takes some time to perfect, learning to effectively network will definately help you out in the long run.
